Ferrets for Dummies

Kim Schilling
Howell Books
ISBN 0764552597

This is an excellent manual for people who keep ferrets as pets. It is comprehensive, covering all aspects of ferret care, including breeding, housing, feeding, and making sure your ferret is not bored. It is geared to a US audience, so there is not much on ferrets as working animals. Owners seeking to work their ferrets need information on this elsewhere. It easy to understand, as are most of the 'dummies' guides, and also has enough information to interest experienced owners.

A very enjoyable book about ferrets, which conveys the magic of owning ferrets to people not familiar with them, as well as delighting existing enthusiasts. There are anecdotes, as well as advice on all aspects of ferret care. This book is geared to a US audience, which means that some information on laws is not applicable to the UK, but generally it is a mine of interesting facts and stories about ferrets.

The Ferret and Ferreting Handbook

James McKay is a ferret enthusiast and extremely knowlegeable. This guide is aimed especially at handlers of working ferrets, with a great deal of help on handling and training. There is also help with the general care of ferrets, and choosing animals. Much of this book covers the same ground as McKay's 'Complete Guide to Ferrets', though this is more aimed at working ferrets, and the latter makes more concessions to pet owners.

Complete Guide to Ferrets

This is a classic guide to keeping and working ferrets. It is almost comprehensive, though it is geared more to owners of working ferrets than to pet owners, and the topic of ferrets as pets is dealt with in less detail than working ferrets. There is a lot to interest experienced ferret owners, including information on ferret history, as well as a help with training, and preventing and dealing with health problems. There is good advice on breeding ferrets, and there are insights into the ethology of ferrets, and what this means for relations between ferrets in a household, and ferrets and their owners. Essential reading for anyone serious about ferrets.
